Florida Science Trip Report

As Tim Peake settles down to life on board the International Space Station, read all about the trip to NASA in Florida that a group of our own budding scientists embarked on earlier this year…

Florida Group 2At 3:30am on Sunday the 11th of October, our journey began. After a five hour coach ride to Manchester and an eight hour flight we landed in Florida. Once we had unpacked, eaten dinner and cooled off in the hotel pool we settled in for the night, all looking forward to the week ahead. Click here to read the full report…

International Year of Light

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 11.51.50To celebrate the UN’s International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies, students and staff at Tynecastle High School have been working with students and staff from Heriot Watt University designing and building lanterns which they will then display at Heriot Watt University on 2nd December alongside a professionally designed outdoor light show by Malcolm Innes – lead artist of the Botanical Garden Lights. This show is the Scottish Closing Ceremony of the International Year of Light called ‘IllumiNations‘.

Last week some of our S1 and S2 students worked in school with students from Heriot Watt to design, decorate and construct lanterns and then programme the LED lights that will go inside their lanterns.

On the 2nd of December the same students will be spending the day at Heriot Watt University where they will hang their lanterns to be displayed in the ‘IllumiNations’ event. They will then visit the science department for some workshops, visit some Year of Illuminations exhibitions and participate in a talk by Jim Alkhalili OBE, who is a British scientist, author, broadcaster and professor of Physics at the University of Surrey.

The light event and lecture will then be repeated in the evening for adult audiences and families with children aged 9+. Our students lanterns will be displayed in prominent position and will be best visible in the evening. Unfortunately tickets for the event have already sold out, but you can still watch the event online and join viewers from across the globe by logging on to https://hwuilluminations.eventbrite.co.uk

Please do join the live broadcast and see what our students have been working on – it really is fantastic!
