In October a group of 10 Tynecastle High School and 10 Castlebrae High School Mandarin learners had the amazing experience of visiting Beijing to experience Chinese culture and put their language skills into practice. We are very grateful to the Swire Chinese Language Foundation for funding this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Students visited famous sites such as the Forbidden City, The Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace and Tiananmen Square, as well as experiencing calligraphy and Kung Fu lessons and using their best Mandarin to haggle in various markets.
We hope you enjoy this short film of the trip made by the students and Mandarin teacher Miss Walker, as much as the students enjoyed their time in Beijing.
In June 2014, with only the rucksacks on our back, 10 students and 2 members of staff headed off to Bolivia for the trip of a lifetime. We spend a month volunteering with the charity Habitats for Humanity, trekking in the jungle and the Apolobamba South mountains and travelling the length and breadth of the country. During the month we saw many spectacular sites, including the Uyuni Salt Flats, the silver mountain in the city of Potosi, Lake Titicaca and the vibrant and lively capital of La Paz. It was an adventure none of us will ever forget.
Check out our Bolivia 2014 video below to experience for yourself the sights and activities we took part in.
At the end of our summer term in June 2014 our senior community involvement class decided to make a fun video to show at our end of term assemblies. They planned and filmed everything that you will see in this wonderful video which will give you a sense of the incredible ethos we have here in school – Tynecastle’s Happy!
