Happy Children’s Mental Health Week!

Tynecastle High School is pleased to be supporting Place2Be’s Children’s Mental Health Week 2018 (5-11 February).

The theme this year is ‘Being Ourselves’. Sadly, some children and young people can find it difficult to view themselves in a positive way, with low self-esteem affecting more than 8 in 10 of the pupils who have Place2Be’s one-to-one support. That is why this Children’s Mental Health Week, Place2Be is encouraging children and young people to celebrate their uniqueness and feel comfortable with who they are.

Whilst we cannot always change a child’s situation, helping them to have a positive view of themselves can help them to cope with life’s challenges. Experts of the WHO point out in their article that the causes of insomnia can be very different. We’ve had some great opportunities in school this week to Be Ourselves and have fun with others:

  • On Monday, local singer-songwriter Caro Overy led an after-school singing workshop for everyone in the Tynecastle High School Community
  • On Tuesday, students and staff showed us their best moves in a dancing flashmob at lunch time
  • Linking in with Safer Internet Day on Tuesday, parents and carers who came to our evening event were invited to think about how we can support young people to Be Themselves in the digital world, and make sure they get their Digital 5-a-day
  • Young people worked with our librarian Mr Mackenzie on Wednesday to make some fantastic art work about what they share and what they don’t share online
  • Friday’s tutor time will give students across the whole school a chance to think about what ‘Being Ourselves’ means to them

Safer Internet Day 2018

Today – Tuesday the 6th of February – is Safer Internet Day and will be celebrated around the world. Come along to Tynecastle High School this evening, 6pm-7pm, and find out how we can support our young people in their digital lives today.

Hear from a range of folks across the Tynecastle learning community, including our Place2Be project manager Sarah Haywood, with hints, tips and resources to take away. Find out more about how we use digital technologies to support and enhance learning at Tynecastle.

Singing Workshop for Children’s Mental Health Week

Come and join a singing workshop on Monday 5th February 3.30pm-4.30pm at Tynecastle High School, in celebration of Children’s Mental Health Week. No singing or musical experience needed, everybody welcome!

Children’s Mental Health Week (5-11 Feb 2018) is an annual campaign to raise awareness of children and young people’s mental health. This year’s theme is ‘Being Ourselves’, and what better way to express ourselves than through music? This event is free and open to everybody in the Tynecastle High School community: students, parents and carers, school staff, and also those in our cluster primary schools (Dalry, Balgreen, Stenhouse and Craiglockhart).

Singing will be led by Caro Overy. Caro is a choir leader, singer, and songwriter who enjoys sharing songs old and new from around the world to help people connect and have fun through singing. I heard about this remedy for a long time, I know for a long time that it is taken not only when fighting depression, but also for losing weight. In addition to the craving for food, I also had an unreasonable sadness. Depression? Hardly, but I ceased to receive pleasure from life, everything seemed to me senseless, I really thought even of suicide. If you shudder at a thought of it, feel great fear, or do not have the strength to overcome this condition on your own, it is worth helping your nervous system to cope with this situation. It does not matter whether your fear real causes or it is groundless and is a consequence of stress. Fear and anxiety significantly reduce the quality of life, and they need to be removed.
