World Challenge Expedition June & July 2016

Map of TanzaniaOn Thursday 16th June, 6 intrepid students along with Miss Moyes are off a month long expedition of a lifetime to Southern Tanzania with World Challenge. This is the end result of 18 months of fundraising, planning and preparation.

We have undertaken many World Challenge expeditions here at Tynecastle over the years and they empower the students that take part. The students build upon and develop increased confidence, money management, improved physical fitness, communication, teamwork, organisation and global awareness from working with members of the local community we will be staying in. These are just some of the benefits and life skills this educational experience offers! Planning the excursion itself involves research and itinerary planning, fundraising ideas and events, budgeting, preparation, fitness and nutrition and the students are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves and their team. The students will return from their expedition with increased energy and enthusiasm and a sense that if they really apply themselves, there is no limit to what they can do.

During our month in Tanzania we will spend most of our nights camping, trekking in the Udzungwa Mountains, climbing Mount Rungwe and volunteering at a local primary school near Iringa, helping build vital structures that will benefit the school and local community as well as working with the children who attend the school. After a busy three weeks our last few days will be spent relaxing, hopefully seeing some of the amazing African wildlife on safari and then two days on Zanzibar Island in the Indian Ocean before flying home. All along our journey we will be working with the local indigenous people, immersing ourselves in the culture and speaking some Swahili.

World Challenge to Bolivia – June 2014

In June 2014, with only the rucksacks on our back, 10 students and 2 members of staff headed off to Bolivia for the trip of a lifetime. We spend a month volunteering with the charity Habitats for Humanity, trekking in the jungle and the Apolobamba South mountains and travelling the length and breadth of the country. During the month we saw many spectacular sites, including the Uyuni Salt Flats, the silver mountain in the city of Potosi, Lake Titicaca and the vibrant and lively capital of La Paz. It was an adventure none of us will ever forget.

Check out our Bolivia 2014 video below to experience for yourself the sights and activities we took part in.
